What Causes a Clear Case to Yellow?

Clear phone cases are typically made from materials that include polymers and plastics. Although various factors contribute to yellowing over time, the main causes are usually:

  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays (oxidation)
  • Exposure to other forms of visible light
  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Oils
  • Sweat
  • Friction

Can Yellowing Be Reversed?

Unfortunately, once these materials start to yellow, reversing the process is nearly impossible since it goes beyond just the surface. However, there are steps you can take to minimize or prevent future yellowing:

  1. Keep your phone and case out of direct sunlight as much as possible. If you’re outdoors, try to keep your phone covered or in a bag.
  2. Avoid exposing your phone or case to other direct visible light sources, like bright lights or lamps.
  3. Refrain from exposing your phone and case to extreme climate conditions, such as high heat or humidity.
  4. Try not to handle your phone when your hands are oily or sweaty—consider carrying a small towel if you’re at the gym.
  5. Avoid keeping your phone in tight spaces, like snug pockets, that can cause excessive friction.

How Else Can I Keep My Clear Case Looking New?

Aside from yellowing, clear phone cases can also show tiny scratches and scuffs more easily due to their transparent nature. To prolong the life of your case and its design, consider these tips:

  • Use a microfiber cloth to gently buff out any minor scratches or scuffs.
  • Lightly dampen a small cloth and wipe away any excess dirt, being careful to avoid the design on your case.
